Okay, my site doesn’t get the hits for my hard standing political opinions, as most of them end up being rants about evil apocalyptic overloads, conspiracies and random movie quotes (because all arguments are best supplemented with random movie quotes).
But today I have something very seriously bad to talk about, cause I know the few meager pages views I do get, aren’t likely to be big on the international news scene. I picked up a link from Max Adams’ forum yesterday about an Italian produced documentary (http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2005/11/8/63218/8857) that examines allegations that the US has used napalm and white phosphorous in Fallujah. These are chemical weapons, if you’re not aware.
Here’s the original blog about the docu (http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2005/11/7/11819/9522)
December last year the US Goverment published this- Denial that US forces were using illegal chemical weapons in Iraq (http://usinfo.state.gov/media/Archive_Index/Illegal_Weapons_in_Fallujah.html). This article cites a lot of Islamic news sources, including Al Jazeera, that were accusing the US of using Napalm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napalm), which has been banned for use against civilian populations by the UN in 1980 . But guess what, the US didn’t actually sign that agreement, so I guess it’s not technically illegal from the US point of view. So then denial rambles on in an argument of semantics about the fact napalm isn’t a gas, and therefore the allegations are false. Not because they haven’t used them, just because napalm isn’t technically a gas. Way to circumvent the actual issue, guys.
That same denial also mentions the use of White Phosphorous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_phosphorus_incendiary) for ‘illumination’ purposes, apparently. Illumination purposes have the unfortunate side effects:
Burns to persons struck by particles of burning WP are usually much less extensive than napalm or metal incendiary burns, but are complicated by the toxicity of phosphorus, the release of phosphoric acid into the wounds, and the possibility of small particles continuing to smoulder for some time if undetected.
And the documentary shows photos of these victims. It has interviews with Soldiers who took part in the attacks. I mean concrete evidence here. If that’s not enough, my Mom informs me that my brother, who was in Iraq, has said they did use napalm and trained with phosphorous at the range. Training… for illumination. Because it takes a PhD to operate a flashlight.
The major thing that’s getting to me is that I woke up this morning expecting to hear the shit hit the fan. I expect my morning radio to at least mention this, but no US news sources have picked this up yet. You malignant media bastards. You know if I throw out the term ‘war crime’ I may completely Godwin my whole argument, but from my understanding of the definition, if it fits…
So yeah, I am being a little reactionary, I don’t know how to express the failure in patriotism and general faith in humanity that this administration has caused in me. A peace of mind I wasn’t even aware that I had until it was gone. Maybe I’m naive, maybe I’m over simplifying things a bit- but this country didn’t used to suck so fucking much. If this is the decline of Western Civilization, bring it on, we deserve it. We really do. At least we have hell to look forward to, and if we’re lucky it won’t hurt as much as the poor folks vaporized by the WP all for the sake of more Walmart’s and our SUVs.
