Been a spell. Job interviews continue. Too much time spent on Facebook. Grasp of complete sentence structure slowly returning. Disclaimer: general opinions on music to follow. My tastes are questionable!
I can’t guiltlessly maintain my usual deluded arrogance when it comes to music because it’s hard to figure out why it is that I like something. Sometimes I can be hypnotized by repetition and white noise. Sometimes I’ve got this desperate need for a breathy, violent pipe organ. Sometimes 11 isn’t loud enough.
And then, you know other days I can listen to some ABBA. So clearly, to any questions of my aesthetics, musical or otherwise, there’s no real accounting for taste.
Things like box office returns, tv ratings and music charts go a long way toward empirical proof of that axiom. I mean seriously, Criminal Minds? Really?! And sure, it’s a stretch, and in all probability I suck, but I gotta say it sort of takes the edge off of dinking once again on first round of the Nicholl competition.
But back to music… This last week I’ve gotten into some new groups I’m liking cranked the fuck up.
Frightened Rabbit – Punchy Scottish group. Big, kinetic sound. Sour, smirking lyrics from the track “Keep Yourself Warm“:
I’m drunk, I’m drunk
And you’re probably on pills
If we’ve both got the same diseases
It’s irrelevant girl
And the room fills with steam
Oh, evaporates disappears
My point of entry is the same way
That I leave
Which now seems perfect for the HOUSE soundtrack if House & Cuddy were to hook up. I mean that’s where we’re going next season anyway, right? Meanwhile, why isn’t Matt Frewer in any episodes of EUReKA this season?
Bit busy in this stretch of two weeks, but legal hilarity has ensued and I’m mostly sane. In the meantime, as I try and get refitted and retuned, I found this fun little medley of songs. Using what probably is the most used I V vi IV chord progression of all time you should recognize a lot of the lyrics. It’s fun! And it’s… well I’ll be honest with you, it’s Journey. Journey should be synonymous with Kryptonite!
OGs of the interwebs may be familiar with the new mashup trend and I’ve enjoyed a few tracks here or there, the Biggie/Gnarls album was fun and there’s a few really excellent ones out. Way back before pentiums and amdidiums and Ghz’s I used to do a little MOD tracking of my own and have since spent a few minutes here and there staying on the comp-music trends, so I have a soft spot for for this kind of creation and innovation. But now the mashup trend has produced something greater and more awesome than I ever could have expected- Muppet Mashup Mix.
Muppets being of course, the Utopia of my childhood.
Available at Radio Clash thanks to Tim, (show #89). The whole show is fun and a lot of energy- with some random babbling thrown in, but worth it to get to tracks like- Kanye Mahna which is honestly so much awesome. Check it out.
And in time for Halloween- also by DJNoNo (who did the Muppet thing above)- is a Halloween Mashup Mix, which Tim was nice enough to point out “is an album, and is by loads of people, not just DJNoNo who just did one track”. You’ll find it at the link above.
Today is Charlie Parker’s birthday. In honor of such, you should treat yourself to his genius. ‘Live at Town Hall with Dizzy’ just became available last year from Uptown Records and captures the upswing of his career admirably.
Got the AC/DC going right this second and it woke me up enough to post a bit, which is a change from the rather terse mundacity that’s become my SOP of late. I’ve also been having some wicked dreams and crippling self doubt recently, but I went clothes shopping earlier tonight so that should be cured here shortly. At this point I’m sure some of you are thinking to yourself, “What? Nicolle- clothes shopping? It’s the apocalypse!” but I did need to extend the business attire since I will be going to Greenville next week to romance some NSF bigwigs. And by romance I mean drive them around from meeting to meeting, get the VCRs working, pick up their lunch and basically be a slave gopher, etc. I doubt it will be much fun, so I’m hoping it will be suitably mindless.
And I did balance the clothing purchases with some suitable audio gear- 2 mics and a nice 8 channel board from Behringer. They sound great, and I’m just toally in lust with em, until I realize I don’t have all THAT much to record, and my singing voice is just a notch better than Marge Simpson swallowing a broken glass and acid cocktail. With no radio promos and no more commercials to VO- I’m not sure how I’m going to justify this; but being the good little consumer I am, it comforts me to possess them. Who says cold, hard technology can’t make you feel all warm inside? Oh wait, maybe that’s a short in the ac wiring…
Saw The Futureheads (http://www.thefutureheads.com/) last week @ The Lincoln Theater- which was ehn. The band rocked, but one employee gave me a hard time with getting my ticket, which was my own fault for buying late, but still people need to GET OFF YOUR CELL PHONES! I walked in at about 5pm and of the 4 people I saw, all of them were on the phone ignoring me. Lamers. Then the FHs had crazy ass lighting that would have given the most hardened clubkid a migrane. And jeez, do I need to take out a loan to buy beer. Lame. Still like the music, but the show was a B- if I’m being generous.
Getting a little behind on my Netflix and new releases, but I’m behind in my writing so I don’t deserve it. Lot of revising needed before I can move forward now. With four plots, two extensive emotional character arcs, a complex heist and backstory and the inane fact the whole mess spawned from one drug addled dream I knew it was going to be one hell of a messy knot. So there’s a bit of backtracking to be done yet before I can move forward with the scenes I haven’t written yet. I’ve added “You’re a sucky lamer!” to my stickies widget (http://www.konfabulator.com/).
