noteworthy whims

Decided to take a swing at the ABC/Disney Fellowship last week, oh, about Wednesday. The deadline was Friday. Usually I’m all about ‘well in advance’ but this one is free, aside from the notarized, DNA stamped application packet. It was nice to find out that I know someone who can notarize on short notice. I should just start getting things notarized at random, or better yet, I could become a notary and then just notarize like a crazy person. I could notarize birthday cards and letters, my bills…*Cue HARP MUSIC and wavey dream-sequence transition* At a movie theater:
Concession Drone: “Are you sure you don’t want to upsize to a large popcorn?”
Me: “No thanks.”
Concession Drone: “It’s only 50 cents more!”
Me: “Seriously, dude, no thanks.”
Concession Drone: “That’ll be 11 dollars.”
Me: “Alright, I’m going to need you to sign and date here, *stamp*. If this popcorn sale comes up in court, you’ll be called as a material witness.”
Concession Drone: “…”
But don’t worry concession drones, because as most people know- I DO NOT EAT MOVIE THEATER POPCORN! Unless I’m there and I have made it myself. The scars.
Meanwhile I need to come up with a new title for “The Laugh Dance” As I rewrite I discover I have absolutely no clue what this script is about anymore. And I’ve renamed all the characters and locations. And maybe kinda thinking about making it neither romantic or comedic. Actually that last one wouldn’t really involve any work I could just leave it the way it is and accomplish that.I always feel like I forget how to start a script when I pass Go.

And for final mention, I repeat a post from several months back- Futurama has been picked up for 13 more episodes by Comedy Central. With all the “they were doinging it, they weren’t…” it can be confusing. Also confusing- Comedy Central being involved. But Fox is still on board all the voice cast is signed and we can hoping the writers/producers will be the same also. So if you’re counting 13 new episodes + the 4 DVD movies = 17 new adventures and I can’t imagine it won’t do well, so who knows what the future holds for Futurama! We love you Bender!

Thoughts on Pixar’s CARS.

My main thought on CARS is that I love Paul Newman. I love anything vaguely related to Paul Newman. I like Newman’s Own salad dressings, and salsas, I’m leaning toward trying out the coffee, and other product line, heck if Paul Newman started hocking radioactive face cream, I’d so totally be there. I do not have a single moment of hesitation in saying that Paul Newman commands nothing but respect and admiration in me.

On the whole I have pretty similar sentiments with regards to Pixar’s films, as every movie has assuaged my doubts that quality movies can still be made. I may have mentioned a few times how, despite how the last few premises have left me cold, when I actually saw the movies, ehn it’s not even worth comment anymore. They’re Pixar, they rock. It’s what they do. So I was going to give CARS a shot no matter what, and it’s an excellent little movie with some great voice acting, amazing visuals and more than adequate storytelling. It’s not mind-blowingly phenominal, but quite enjoyable, and oh yeah, there’s the whole Paul Newman bit.

Key things worth mentioning- good tribute to car and automotive history- I like NASCAR to an extent so I have no problems there, but even more, I love the history of Nascar so the elements with Richard Petty and Rusty, the different stock car styles, etc were really solid. I also happen to love the nostalgia of Route 66 so the golden age sequence did in fact make me misty- but that’s the effect a lot of history has on me.

The ‘bugs’ were cute, a reminder that Pixar is always so sharp about boiling down the details, just so utterly refined with so much attention and care that continues to earn my respect at how the studio treats development. The main story isn’t really exceptional and Owen Wilson’s McQueen is a pretty pat hero, but they don’t over do it, and it ends up being a pretty seamless little fable with heart.

Worth seeing by all means, as is the case with every Pixar film. Enjoy the gorgeous tech, stellar cast and just go enjoy the lovely sound of Paul Newman’s voice. B+

Game 6!?

Well, I wasn’t really looking forward to it, but tomorrow night will be Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. For the sake of my sanity let’s hope it ends there. The Canes have their work cut out for them, they’re going to have to capitalize on the penalties, and keep the pace. And bring the PAIN already! If Doug weight doesn’t play I’m going to be terribly sad. Aaron Ward looked all right by third period, not completely back, but after that late hit on Staal, forget it. Hurt them. Going to hit the RBC tomorrow for the game, expect I shall have no voice on Monday.
Meanwhile I went to San Francisco/Fresno with the fam and came back. Pictures forthcoming. Interesting note- there was a earthquake there on Wednesday, only about a day and a half since I had left there, and my thought was- ‘Ha-ha! You missed me!’ and then last night there was an earthquake in NC! So I’ve obviously pissed someone off. Let’s hope all karmic retribution falls on my shoulders in the form of hives or a pox or something instead of a Game 7.

time for SCIENCE!

Two of the coolest things of all time have occured in the course of as many days, the first of which being the Carolina Hurricanes beating the Buffalo Sabers to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals. In a gut-wrenching seven-game series I somehow managed to survive without extensive bloodloss, Brind’Amor and the boys eeked out the final win last night at the RBC Center. Being a home-grown Carolina fan, I have to say a few things, because this is my blog and I do whut I want! So here they are in no particular order- Buffalo fans, please don’t whine. It was a helluva matchup, yes you had some injuries, such is sports. All the jerks berating Carolina for ’stealing’ the team from Hartford- holy god, DIAF all ready. Lastly, anyone saying Canes fans know nothing about hockey needs to come on by my apartment, I have a massive head trauma waiting for you- born and raised in the south I’ve been a NHL fan since I was about 10 years old. Blackhawks and Toronto were my major teams. My favorite ECHL team was the Raleigh Icecaps, who I STILL have crap from laying around my apartment. AND I’ve seen Slap Shot (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076723/) so shut the hell up already.

Anyway, the second super cool thing of all time is that Extraterrestrial Life may have actually been found! CNN reports (http://edition.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/06/02/red.rain/index.html) Godfrey Louis collected samples of weird ‘blood rain’ that fell in India about a year ago and has been running tests on the stuff. Specifically, Louis has isolated strange, thick-walled, red-tinted cell-like structures about 10 microns in size. Stranger still, dozens of his experiments suggest that the particles may lack DNA yet still reproduce plentifully, even in water superheated to nearly 600 degrees Fahrenheit. (The known upper limit for life in water is about 250 degrees Fahrenheit.)

Which is totally freakin’ COOL! I suggest you scurry over to the article and read it for yourself.
